Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton, center, is sacked by Tennessee Titans’ Colin McCarthy, left, and Karl Klug, right, during the third quarter of an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011.

Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton, center, is sacked by Tennessee Titans’ Colin McCarthy, left, and Karl Klug, right, during the third quarter of an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011.

The Tennessee Titans still are trying to find their way as a defense, and they know very well their challenge is to put together another stingy performance for a second straight week.

The Titans stymied Cam Newton, forcing his worst performance as a rookie, and held Carolina to its first game without a touchdown this season.

Next up is Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said Wednesday that’s the NFL, where there’s never any long stretches to enjoy playing well for long.

“Our defense no doubt played well against an offense that was playing really well at that time,” Munchak said. “This week is a veteran group that everyone gave a great chance to win the NFC, and they are a little disappointed at how they are playing at 5-4 … We need to win, they need to win, and defense is obviously going to be a big part of that.”

The Titans (5-4) came up with a season-high five sacks by six players, forced two turnovers and allowed a season-low in points in the 30-3 win — even with three rookies starting and a fourth subbing in. Jurrell Casey, a third-round pick out of Southern California, has started every game, with Karl Klug, a fifth-round pick out of Iowa, rotating in at tackle every week. Akeem Ayers, the second-round pick from UCLA, also has started every game at linebacker.

Colin McCarthy, the fourth-rounder out of Miami, got his first NFL start at middle linebacker with veteran Barrett Ruud out due to a groin injury. McCarthy lined up everyone and had a team-high eight tackles with a hit on Newton.

“A lot of the rookies now are knowing what to do and know their jobs,” defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks said.

The Titans held Carolina to 279 yards, well below what the NFL’s fifth-best offense had been cranking out.

Safety Michael Griffin credited the rookies’ strong play, along with having safety Chris Hope back. The 10-year veteran broke his left arm Oct. 2, and the Titans eased him back onto the field in Carolina, where he intercepted a tipped pass to keep the Panthers out of the end zone. Griffin said Hope’s return allowed the Titans to put six defensive backs on the field and use more of their playbook in confusing Newton.

Atlanta coach Mike Smith said he noticed how many different looks the Titans showed Carolina, which makes more work for an offense preparing for Tennessee. Doing that with four rookies at times is even more impressive.

“It says a lot about that rookie class that there are some good football players, and it says a lot about coach (Jerry) Gray and his staff to be able to be that multiple with four young players,” Smith said of the Titans’ defensive coordinator.

But the Titans have been up and down this season. They ranked first in the NFL in fewest points allowed in early October, then gave up 79 points and 949 yards combined in consecutive losses to Pittsburgh and Houston. They know too well how inconsistent they’ve been.

Cornerback Jason McCourty said he thinks the performance in Carolina helped the defense’s confidence, especially in how the hard work preparing and watching film turns into results on game day. A strong performance by the line is a big help, too, and the Titans know Ryan has been sacked 20 times through nine games.

“We tell those guys all the time they have a performance like that, five sacks and pressuring the quarterback, it makes our job easier,” McCourty said. “We know it starts up front with them. When they have a good game, they make us look good.”

Notes: Ruud (groin) practiced Wednesday after sitting out last week’s game. LB Gerald McRath (hamstring) did not practice along with DE Dave Ball (concussion). … The Titans practiced indoors due to heavy rain that ended just before practice.
THE TENNESSEE TITANS MR. FOOTBALL AWARDS

TO BE PRESENTED ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2011

Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center, Murfreesboro

11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.

Baylor’s Barrett Gouger was named as a finalist for the DII-AA Lineman of the year and Henrique Ribeiro finalist for Kicker of the Year. South Pittsburg’s Jajuan Lankford is one of the finalists for Class A Back of the Year.

Three finalists in each category for each division and class were announced Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards will be presented to the top 10 backs and linemen in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association on Monday, November 28, 2011, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro.

For the tenth consecutive year, the top kicker in the state will be recognized with a Mr. Football Award. There are three finalists in this category, regardless of their schools classification.

“High school football in Tennessee enjoys a great tradition throughout the state and we are pleased to join the TSSAA for the fourth consecutive year in saluting these fine young men at the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards,” said Adams. “The young men that are recognized with these awards are truly the best of the best! They are selected not only for their football skills, but for their strong character and academic achievements and we’re honored to join the TSSAA in saluting them!”

A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on performance in the 2011 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration. High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists.

“We’re very thankful to Mr. Adams and the Tennessee Titans for their continued commitment to high school athletics in serving as the title sponsor for these awards, stated Bernard Childress, Executive Director of the TSSAA.

“We are obviously excited and appreciative about being involved with the Tennessee Titans. They have helped make the recognition of the 33 student-athletes, their families, and schools possible,” added Childress.

This is the twenty-seventh year that the Mr. Football Awards have been presented to Tennessees best high school football players. Plaques will be presented to 22 other finalists.

Approximately 600 people, including the honorees, their families, coaches, school administrators and members of the media from all parts of the state, are expected to attend the 2011 luncheon.

Mike Keith, play-by-play voice of the Tennessee Titans, will emcee the awards presentation. Live videostream of the awards will be provided for free by the TSSAA Network. Those interested can watch the awards by going to www.TSSAANetwork.com.

The Indianapolis Colts could be without their top running back when they look for their first victory of the 2011-12 NFL season in a game against the Tennessee Titans on October 30, 2011.

Joseph Addai(notes) was held out of practice on October 26 because of a nagging hamstring injury that has flared up on him. Addai had missed the Colts’ Week 6 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. He re-injured his hamstring after he returned during the Colts’ 62-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 7. The Colts may want to proceed cautiously because it seems like Jim Caldwell is rushing him back.

This injury shouldn’t mean much for the Colts. Addai hasn’t rushed for 1,000 yards in a single season since 2007-08. 2009-10 was the only season where he had more than 750 all-purpose yards since that time period (rushing and receiving). He also missed half of the 2010-11 season because of injuries. Addai has basically regressed into a decoy running back who has had difficulty with remaining healthy.

Delone Carter(notes) and Donald Brown(notes) combined to have 136 rushing yards on 19 carries against the Saints. At the least, I feel like both running backs have performed on the same level as Addai has for the past few seasons. Both are eager to prove themselves so that they may get more playing time even when Addai returns.

The Titans mustn’t overlook any opponents now that they’re 3-3 after getting outscored 79-24 by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans in their past two games. The Titans’ run defense has been gashed during that time period. Jonathan Dwyer(notes) and Isaac Redman(notes) combined to have 156 rushing yards on 26 carries in the Steelers’ Week 5 victory. Arian Foster(notes) and Ben Tate(notes) both had over 100 yards rushing for the Texans in their Week 7 victory.

Run offense and run defense should play a critical factor for the Colts and Titans in their Week 8 meeting. The Colts have also surrendered over 150 rushing yards per game. The St. Louis Rams are the only team who has allowed more (183.8). However, Chris Johnson hasn’t been able to rediscover his groove since he sat out of training camp. The Titans are averaging fewer than 65 rushing yards per game. That’s 15 fewer yards than the Seattle Seahawks and at least 25 fewer yards than anyone else.

A few film notes from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 38-14 Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans…

Tennessee Titans

– Tennessee’s offensive line did an outstanding job of blocking the Steelers’ front seven and providing an escort for running back Chris Johnson, who rushed for 51 yards on just 14 carries. The Titans couldn’t keep the ground attack going because they fell behind, but that doesn’t negate the efforts of their line. They used slide protection to get the Steelers’ line going one way, and Johnson would then either hit the gap to that side or read the cutback and go opposite. Left guard Leroy Harris(notes) and center Eugene Amano(notes) are dynamic upfield blockers who know how to tag a linebacker and create extra space in the running game. Harris is also very good at pulling right and sealing the edge for Johnson and the Titans’ other running backs — he stoned LaMarr Woodley(notes) with one outstanding first-quarter pull-block, and that’s no small achievement.

The Titans’ line is best at establishing power at the point of attack, and then spreading its force to create other opportunities. You can definitely see the influence of head coach Mike Munchak, the team’s former O-line coach and a Hall of Fame offensive lineman himself.

– The Titans’ defensive linemen really seemed to struggle with certain assignments. When ends Derrick Morgan(notes) and Dave Ball(notes) were asked to flare out in coverage on zone blitzes, they weren’t able to do much but provide stationary targets for Ben Roethlisberger(notes) to avoid. And on Heath Miller’s(notes) first-quarter touchdown, tackle Karl Klug(notes) had Miller in his vicinity, but stayed home while Miller advanced to the goal line. Sending a bunch of zone blitzes at Roethlisberger might not be the best idea — Big Ben’s defensive coordinator is Dick LeBeau, who pretty much invented the concept. You imagine that he might see zone blitzes at a pretty high level through the week.

The Titans’ D-linemen didn’t do much better staying at home at times, either; Jonathan Dwyer’s(notes) long second-quarter run was a beautifully executed example of (take it away, Vince Lombardi): “A seal here, a seal here, and we run it IN THE ALLEY!” Left guard Doug Legursky(notes) (pulling right) and right tackle Marcus Gilbert(notes) did an incredible job of blocking out the lane for Dwyer’s first run of the season.

Pittsburgh Steelers

– Generally speaking, the Titans present an interesting set of defensive problems in that they’re multiple in their schemes, but they disguise their diversity very well by looking pretty vanilla (a lot of 4-3 or 4-2 nickel) and then, spreading out into different coverages after the snap. Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians put together a brilliant gameplan to counter this — he used a lot of pre-snap motion by receivers from side to side, sweeps and end-arounds to force the defense to pull one way, and quick throws in spread-style formations to get under what Tennessee was doing. The zone blitzes previously discussed aside, Roethlisberger also read Tennessee’s standard blitzes very well — it also helps that he’s conditioned himself to be unafraid of the blitz because his offensive lines have been so poor for so long.

The Steelers also used a lot of influence motion in their running plays — little half-motion sets by Hines Ward(notes) to draw a linebacker in and out. And as they generally are, the Steelers were very successful when they ran out of bunch formations — the formation/play they run more consistently than any other team. It’s important to note that with injuries on both sides of the ball, and facing a very good defense, Arians helped his team win as much as any player on the field.

– There were certain points where outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley absolutely took over this game — he certainly seemed to recognize the importance of his play with battery-mate James Harrison(notes) out with a fractured orbital bone (yikes). One play that really stood out was his sack of Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes) with 9:39 left in the first quarter. The Titans had second-and-goal from the Pittsburgh 7-yard line, and Woodley rushed in from the defensive left side as tight end Daniel Graham(notes) released into the end zone. Fullback Ahmard Hall(notes) stayed in to block Woodley, but it didn’t matter, because Woodley just pushed Hall a good 2 yards back with his initial attack, and when Hall regained his footing, Woodley pushed Hall back into Hasselbeck and got the sack.

Woodley can do a number of things — tackle the run very well, cover in space as well as any 3-4 outside linebacker, and speed-rush around the edge — but his sheer power is the extra element that makes him a true force.
