HOUSTON (AP) — The Tennessee Titans‘ regular-season finale came down to a 2-point conversion.

The Texans botched it, and the Titans stayed alive in the playoff hunt — at least for a few more hours.

Matt Hasselbeck threw two touchdown passes, and Tennessee staved off Houston‘s last-minute rally in a 23-22 victory Sunday.

Tennessee (9-7) earned its first winning record since 2008 in Mike Munchak‘s first season, but its postseason fate depended on the outcome of later games in Cincinnati, Oakland and Denver.

The Titans got some early help when the New York Jets lost in Miami, but then had to sweat out the final two minutes when Ahmard Hall fumbled, and Jake Delhomme drove Houston for a touchdown with 14 seconds left.

The Texans (10-6) were locked into the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs before the game began.

With their position secured and nothing to lose but more players to injury, coach Gary Kubiak called for a two-point conversion to avoid overtime and win the game in regulation.

“You would never go for 2 there in any other situation,” Kubiak said. “But where we were physically, at the end of the game, I had a tight end (Garrett Graham) playing linebacker. Our team, I had to get them to next week.”

But tight end Joel Dreessen was flagged for illegal motion, and then backup center Thomas Austin flipped the snap over Delhomme’s head and the game was over.

Kubiak and Munchak shared a chuckle at midfield after the game.

“I think if they were shooting for the playoffs, they probably kick the extra point and go to overtime,” Munchak said.

Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan took offense to Kubiak’s decision.

“I think they wanted to show that no matter who they put on the field, they want to embarrass us and beat us,” Finnegan said. “And we ended up winning.”

The victory might turn out to mean nothing.

Tennessee needed the Bengals to lose to Baltimore and victories by Oakland and Denver to earn a playoff berth. And that would land the Titans right back in Houston next week to play the Texans.

“Of course, having a chance to still make the playoffs is a great thing,” running back Chris Johnson said. “That’s one of the team goals around here to make the playoffs and hopefully make it to the Super Bowl.”

The Texans, meanwhile, will head into the franchise’s first postseason on a three-game losing streak and new concerns about their quarterback.

Rookie starter T.J. Yates left the game after one series and was replaced by the 36-year-old Delhomme. Kubiak said Yates had a bruised left shoulder but could’ve returned if necessary.

“Obviously, I didn’t want him to go back in the game,” Kubiak said. “We’ll know better where we’re at (Monday), at this point.”

Delhomme, signed Nov. 29 in the wake of season-ending injuries to starter Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart, completed 18 of 28 passes in his first action since December 2010.

Johnson ran for 61 yards to go over 1,000 for the fourth consecutive season, and Rob Bironas kicked three field goals for Tennessee.

“It was an interesting ending,” Munchak said. “Our goal was to come in here and win this game. We did that. We’re 9-7 and that’s all we can control.”

Yates was sacked on Houston’s first snap by Jurrell Casey and Derrick Morgan. He completed passes to Dreessen and James Casey for first downs, before Ben Tate and Derrick Ward started alternating touches for the rest of the drive.

Tate plowed into the end zone with 5:15 left in the first quarter, but Yates came off the field favoring his left shoulder and went to the locker room.

Yates jogged back to the Houston sideline for the start of the second quarter. But after Bironas kicked a 21-yard field goal, Delhomme returned for the Texans’ next possession.

Titans defensive end Dave Ball sacked Delhomme and knocked the ball loose, and safety Chris Hope recovered at the Texans 33. Hasselbeck threw a 25-yard pass to Jared Cook, then found Donnie Avery in the corner of the end zone to move Tennessee in front.

Hasselbeck completed 22 of 35 passes for 297 yards without an interception.

Delhomme threw a 16-yard pass to Andre Johnson to get Houston moving again. Johnson caught two passes and sat out the second half after missing the previous three games with a strained left hamstring.

Notes: Hall and Titans LT Mike Otto left with “probable” concussions, Munchak said. WR Damian Williams has a rib injury, Munchak said, and would be re-evaluated Monday. … Chris Johnson is the third player in Titans history to reach 1,000 yards rushing in at least four straight seasons, joining Eddie George (1996-2000) and Earl Campbell (1978-81). … Bironas extended his own NFL record by kicking a field goal of at least 40 yards in his 10th consecutive game. … The Texans dropped to 5-1 in season finales under Kubiak. … Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips worked from the press box after missing two games following kidney and gall bladder surgery.

He’s’ also just 73 yards shy of Frank Wycheck’s franchise record of 769 yards receiving by a tight end going into Sunday’s game at Houston (10-5).

“We know what a good player he is. I think since the first day (offensive coordinator) Chris Palmer came in here and in the first press conference, I think he is the first guy he talked about,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said of Cook. “I think there has been an emphasis to try to get him the ball.”

In last week’s 23-17 win over Jacksonville, Cook had eight catches for 169 yards including a 55-yard touchdown. That bumped aside Casper who had 150 yards receiving Nov. 30, 1980, against Cleveland for the then-Houston Oilers. That also marked Cook’s second straight 100-yard receiving game and put him over 1,000 yards receiving fo rhis career.

Cook has 45 receptions for the season. His biggest challenge since being drafted out of South Carolina is being an up-and-down player. He has 17 catches the past two weeks, but none in either of the two previous games.

“There are going to be roller coasters in seasons, you just got to roll with it,” Cook said. “Sometimes the offense expects to do great things, but sometimes we don’t. You’ve just got to keep riding the roller coaster.”

The tight end is just happy that things are finally going well for him.

“It feels good,” he said. “Hopefully, this is kind of a preview of what’s to come for the offense. It feels good to be out there and offense is clicking and everybody is catching balls.”

As for why Cook has been so inconsistent, that appears to remain a bit of a mystery.

“Things are trending the way where it’s either feast of famine with him more so than anything,” Munchak said. “It just a multiple of factors … and it doesn’t mean that we are not trying to get him the ball. There could be things about what Cookie is doing and what he is not doing, the quarterback getting a read wrong, how they are covering, it’s all of those things going into the equation.”

Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck agreed, saying it was good to see Cook involved in the game from start to finish against the Jaguars.

“It was nice to see Jared Cook come out and play so well,” Hasselbeck said. “He’s always been kind of a big-play threat for us in a way, but he consistently played well for us in that game, catching the ball, pass blocking, all of it. That was great to see. He’s a matchup problem for a lot of people.”

The Titans (8-7) hope to keep up that trend Sunday at Houston. They must win to maintain their playoff hopes and need help from later games to earn a playoff berth.

They head into the game relatively healthy.

Defensive end Jason Jones remains in a walking boot with a high ankle sprain and is doubtful. But running back Chris Johnson (right ankle), receiver Lavelle Hawkins (ankle), tight end Daniel Graham (illness), defensive tackle Shaun Smith (knee) and linebacker Gerald McRath (knee/ankle) all practiced fully Friday and are questionable.

The three Titans quarterbacks rank potential plays in the game plan each week, letting offensive coordinator Chris Palmer know which ones they think will be most successful against a particular opponent.

This week, all three quarterbacks — who do their homework separately — ranked the deep crossing route to tight end Jared Cook as an excellent option.

The coaching staff apparently agreed, which is why the Titans went to Cook again and again during their 23-17 win over the Jaguars on Saturday.

When all was said and done, Cook had hauled in eight catches for a career-best 169 yards, a total that included a 55-yard touchdown. He broke the franchise record for receiving yards by a tight end, set by Dave Casper (150) in 1980.

“It was awesome,” Cook said. “I just wanted to kind of prove to the players what I could really be. (Palmer) kind of gave me the opportunity to do that today. He kind of mixed it up, came out gunning, so it worked in our benefit.”

There were at least a couple of reasons the Titans went pass-heavy against the Jaguars.

Running back Chris Johnson was gimpy all week, missing two days of practice because of a sore ankle. Also, the Jacksonville secondary has been ravaged by injury — 11 defensive backs on injured reserve.

“We talked a lot about that,” Cook said. “Their whole defense lost a lot of guys and put them on the IR, so we felt like we could take advantage of that.”

If Cook still had any doubt as to how much influence he might have Saturday, it was answered when he saw the script for the first 15 plays.

“I saw there was a little change-up from the normal and we kind of got excited,” Cook said. “So kudos to coach Palmer for kind of doing that and catching the defense off guard.”

Cook caught three passes for a combined 47 yards on the Titans’ first two series, but it was his fourth catch that provided the afternoon’s biggest highlight.

He sprinted down the middle of the field, past Jaguars middle linebacker Paul Posluszny, and made a 55-yard touchdown reception.

“We all talk about him, what a great talent he is, and today he put it all together,” Coach Mike Munchak said. “It was a huge game by him and it was great on us for getting him the football as much as we did. It made a big difference.”

It was the deep crossing route that paid huge dividends late in the game, with the Titans holding on to a six-point lead and facing a third-and-five from their 22.

Hasselbeck hit Cook for a 29-yard gain, which helped the Titans run out the clock on their final drive.

Only a couple of weeks ago, Titans fans were wondering what had happened to Cook, who went without a catch for consecutive weeks against the Bills and Saints.

But he’s responded with two huge games — a combined 17 catches for 272 yards.

“There are going to be roller-coasters in the season, but you just have to roll with it,” Cook said. “Sometimes the offense is going to do great things and sometimes we don’t. We just have to keep riding the roller-coaster.”

Cook is apparently someone who enjoys coming down the stretch, as he made 15 of his 29 catches in 2010 over the final three games of the season.

“Jared has always had it in him,” safety Michael Griffin said. “You just don’t know when you’re going to get it from him. … He’s a basketball player, but he has the ability to be a great football player. It’s just a matter of having that confidence.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is questionable for Saturday’s game with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being limited by his sore right ankle Friday.

Johnson hurt his ankle late in last week’s 27-13 loss to the Colts and did not practice Tuesday or Wednesday.

Receiver Nate Washington, who is having a career year with catches and yards receiving, practiced fully with his sore left ankle and is probable. Linebacker Patrick Bailey was limited but is probable for the Titans’ home finale due to a hamstring injury.

Defensive end William Hayes (groin) practiced and is questionable. LInebacker Gerald McRath (left knee/ankle) did not practice and is out.

Defensive end Dave Ball did not practice but not because of injury. His wife gave birth to a son on Wednesday.

The New Orleans Saints’ last three games have been high profile victories over the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and Detroit Lions. But this week’s road game against the Tennessee Titans has quietly turned into an equally tough test.

For one thing, the Saints have struggled on the road this year, posting a 3-3 record, and this will be their first road game in four weeks. For another, the Titans (7-5) have won three of their last four games, with dangerous tailback Chris Johnson finally getting hot over the last few weeks. And Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck certainly won’t be intimidated by the Saints defense after he picked them apart during last season’s playoffs as the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks.

“It’s a combination of all those things,” Saints linebacker Scott Shanle said when asked which threat looms largest. “I think playing the last two games the way we’ve played, at home, in the environment, having our fans behind us, and now you’ve got to leave that atmosphere and go play on the road against a good team, against a really good running back, and they’ve been playing solid defense as well. So that’s just the challenge of getting away from home, where it’s felt comfortable, we’ve been playing well. Now we have to go back and see if we can do it away from home.”

Safety Malcolm Jenkins agreed that all of those factors will keep the Saints’ attention this week.

“Hasselbeck, we all know what he’s capable of, especially from last year. Chris Johnson is coming on real hot lately. And that team has been playing well in the last couple of weeks,” Jenkins said. “They’re a hot team and going into their house playing on the road, especially after the last four games have been emotional games, some real intense games. It will be a challenge for us to continue with that intensity, continue with that same focus to go on the road and try to get a win.”

Two of the Saints losses this season were outdoor games – at Tampa Bay and at Green Bay. But Jenkins said he’s not worried about this team coming out flat again this season.

“I think we’ll do a good job,” Jenkins said. “I know from the leadership on this team and from the coaches, we’ll do a good job of getting guys emotionally ready for this game. It’s too late in the season to really have one of those lulls as far as what we’re trying to accomplish and our focus. I think we know what’s on the line, we know what’s at stake, and we’ll continue to show up.”

What are your opinions.

Orchard Park, N.Y. — Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans ran by in a flash and the Buffalo Bills' season seems to be doing the same

Orchard Park, N.Y. —

Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans ran by in a flash and the Buffalo Bills’ season seems to be doing the same.

Johnson ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yard dash in the second quarter that gave the Titans the lead for good in Sunday’s 23-17 win over the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Titans finished the day with 187 rushing yards and Matt Hasselbeck completed 16-of-25 passes for 140 yards.

“At the beginning of the season the passing game carried us, but now it’s time for the running game to step it up,” said Johnson.

Rob Bironas added three field goals, including a 44-yarder in the fourth that gave the Titans a 23-10 lead.

C.J. Spiller, starting for the second consecutive week in place of the injured Fred Jackson, rushed for 80 his career-high 83 yards in the first half.

“In my first start last year, I was doing a lot of thinking in the game and I really wouldn’t let my ability take over,” said Spiller. “Now, I’m just going out there and playing football, just playing the way I always played.”

Spiller also had a 41-yard touchdown in the first quarter nullified by a holding penalty against fullback Corey McIntyre.

“I don’t know what the ref saw, but when you don’t touch a person, let him spin, and don’t even grab him,” said McIntyre. “You be the judge of that. You can call it phantom or whatever, but I know that wasn’t a hold.”

Spiller gave the Bills a 7-3 lead when he recovered his own fumble in the end zone after a 30-yard run down the left sideline.

Titans safety Michael Griffin knocked the ball out of Spiller’s grasp at the 5-yard line and the ball bounced into the end zone. Referees initially ruled Spiller recovered it out the back of the end zone for a touchback, giving Tennessee the ball at the Buffalo 20.

However, a replay challenge overturned the play to a touchdown. Tennessee (7-5), which has won three of four, took the lead on its next drive on Johnson’s long touchdown run and the running back added a four-yard score later in the half to make it 17-7.

“If we can run the ball that well, we become a tough team to stop,” said Titans head coach Mike Munchak.

The Bills got closer with Ryan Fitzpatrick’s two-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson on 4th down with just under three minutes to go in the fourth, but a once promising 5-2 start has turned into a five-game losing streak.

“We’ve still got resolve to go out there and win every game,” said Bills tight end Scott Chandler, had a fumble that set up an 11-play drive for Tennessee that use up more than six minutes of the clock in the third quarter capped by a Bironas field goal. “We were set up in pretty good shape and we need to get back to winning.”

Fitzpatrick finished 29-of-46 for 288 yards and Brad Smith, in his second straight start at wide receiver, caught a career-best seven passes for 72 yards. Stevie Johnson had five catches for 52 yards for Buffalo (5-7).

“I think the reason we lost was fundamentals,” said Bills head coach Chan Gailey. “You’ve got to block, you’ve got to tackle, and you’ve got to take care of the football. Those are the things that happened to us in this game that we didn’t get the job done to win and you have to do those things, fundamentally, in order to be able to win.”

Rookie Colin McCarthy, starting at middle linebacker for Tennessee in place of the injured Barrett Ruud (groin), had a team-best eight tackles, as well as a forced fumble that led to a Chris Johnson touchdown and a fumble recovery that set up a field goal.

“If you want to make a run at this thing in December you need guys to make plays and that’s what we saw today,” said Munchak.

Notebook: The game was blacked out on local TV because it failed to sell out. The announced attendance was 56,463 … Bills safety George Wilson (neck) missed his third straight game … Spiller also had a 41-yard touchdown run in the first half negated by a holding penalty against fullback Corey McIntyre … Johnson had his third 100-yard game in the last four weeks after only through the first eight games of the season … Bills LB Nick Barnett had a game-high 10 tackles and a sack.

TENNESSEE TITANS VS. BUFFALO BILLS – RALPH WILSON STADIUM – ORCHARD PARK, NY

The Following is 2 on Your Sides Blog of the Bills-Titans Game

FIRST QUARTER

-Fitzpatrick well off the mark on his first three pass attempts. Either deflected or nearly picked off as the Bills go three and out on the first series.

12:31 – TITANS FG – ROB BIRONAS FOR 48-YARDS – 3-0 TENNESSEE. Matt Hasselbeck can’t quite connect in the passing game and the Titans settle for a field goal on their opening drive.

7:17 - BILLS TOUCHDOWN - C.J. SPILLER 30-YARD RUN – 7-3 BILLS. Spiller turns the corner and takes off down the left sideline heading for the end zone before he’s stripped of the football. He recovers in the back of the end zone and is first ruled out of bounds for a touchback. The Bills challenge the call and it is overturned on review. Replay clearly showed Spiller had two hands on the ball and a knee down in the end zone. Prior to that, Fitzpatrick settled down in the passing game hitting David Nelson for 13-yards and Brad Smith for a 23-yard gain.

5:58 – TITANS TOUCHDOWN – CHRIS JOHNSON 48-YARD RUN – TENNESSEE LEADS 10-7. That didn’t take long. The Titans respond with a 4-play 75-yard drive that was capped with Chris Johnson taking off for a 48-yard TD.

-The Bills go for it on 4th and 3. Ryan Fitzpatrick scrambles and appears headed for the first down before coughing the football up and the Titans recover ad their own 43-yard line. Prior to that, Spiller had a long touchdown run called back because of holding.

SECOND QUARTER

13:52 – TITANS TOUCHDOWN – CHRIS JOHNSON 4-YARD RUN – TENNESSEE LEADS 17-7. Chris Johnson rolls in basically untouched from four yards out to cap a 6-play 57-yard drive. He’s got 7-carries for 90-yards and two touchdowns in the game to this point. The Titans have scored on their first three possessions of the game.

6:51 – BILLS FIELD GOAL – DAVE RAYNER FROM 27-YARDS – TENNESSEE LEADS 17-10. The Bills continue to move the football and Spiller continues to look impressive. The Bills had a 3rd and 8 at the Tennessee 10-yard line and a pass to Spiller is stopped short. Earlier in that drive, Spiller ran for 25-yards and established a new career high with 75 rushing yards in the game.

THIRD QUARTER

-The Bills defense comes out strong to start the third quarter forcing a Titans punt with a Nick Barnett sack of Hasselbeck on 3rd and 6.

-The Bills wind up with outstanding field position at their own 41. Fitzpatrick hits Chandler on a nice completion and in fighting for extra yardage, he coughs up the football and the Titans recover.

6:54 – TITANS FIELD GOAL – ROB BIRONAS FROM 27-YARDS – TENNESSEE LEADS 20-10. The Titans have now scored ten points off Buffalo turnovers. Bryan Scott comes up with a great tackle on third down, and the Titans wind up settling for a field goal after converting a 4th and 1 at the Buffalo 18. Credit the Buffalo defense with the fact that Tennessee is 0-for-7 on third down.

Bills cornerback Aaron Williams is out of the game with an injury to his right knee. Leodis McKelvin is in to replace him.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:00 – TITANS FIELD GOAL – ROB BIRONAS FROM 44-YARDS – TENNESSEE LEADS 23-10. The Titans drive 57-yards in 13-plays. The Bills defense comes up with another stop, but the Titans are able to extend the lead to 13-points on Bironas’s third field goal of the day in tricky wind conditions.

3:01 – BILLS TD – RYAN FITZPATRICK 2-YARD PASS TO STEVE JOHNSON. The Bills cap a 15-play 80-yard drive with the touchdown to Johnson. The Bills converted a key fourth and inches on a pitch to Tashard Choice. Fitzpatrick hit Johnson for the touchdown on 4th and goal to keep Buffalo in the game with 3:01 left. After scoring, Johnson trotted to the official and handed him the football after the controversy and fine surrounding his excessive celebration penalty against the Jets last week.

:12 – The Buffalo defense gives the Bills the ball back… Buffalo had to start its drive at the 15-yard line. Fitzpatrick hit Naaman Roosevelt for a gain of 27-yards, but threw incompletions the rest of the way and the final drives stalls.

TENNESSEE WINS GAME 23-17.

Talk about your decision to leave school early and enter the NFL draft? "I think things happen for a reason. God had a plan for me.

Talk about your decision to leave school early and enter the NFL draft?

“I think things happen for a reason. God had a plan for me. I felt like I was ready to play at the next level. I knew I could run, block and catch and be a dynamic player in the NFL. There really wasn’t one reason I left early. It was a combination of things. I wasn’t sure about the new offense they were bringing in (at Clemson), and I wasn’t sure what my role in that offense might be, so I felt like it was a good time to leave. I have no regrets about leaving early.”

Clemson certainly has turned things around offensively. How do you think you’d have done in that offense?

“That offense has been unbelievable. Those guys are my brothers and I couldn’t be happier or more proud of them. Tajh (Boyd) is having a great season, and Andre (Ellington) is running great. They are all stepping up and playing great, and I think they are finally going to get that ACC championship this year. A little part of me wishes I was back there running in that offense, but I made the right decision.”

What’s Chris Johnson really like?

“He’s a great guy. He always tries to keep things loose. He works harder than anyone on the team, and I’ve learned so much from him this year. He likes to laugh and joke around, but when it’s time for work, he wants to work and you better bring your A-game. He’s a perfectionist. He practices like he plays and that’s what makes him one of the best running backs in the NFL?

How fast is Chris Johnson? Faster than C.J. Spiller?

“They are two of the fastest guys I’ve ever been around. When Chris hits a hole, he hits it full speed and C.J. is the same way. You think a guy has an angle on Chris and he blows right past him. I’d love to see those two guys race each other. I’m not sure who’d win. They both have crazy speed. But on a track, I’d have to go with Jacoby Ford all day.”

At 6-2 and 235 pounds, you’re big enough to be a fullback. Any talk of playing some at fullback?

“Not really. They use me a little bit as a back-up to Ahmard Hall, but there’s no talk about moving me to fullback. Being a fullback is a totally different mentality. If they need me to play some fullback, I’ll do it. Whatever gets me on the field.”

You’ve got Jared Cook and Shaun Smith, both former USC players on the team. With the Clemson-USC game this week, what’s that been like?

“Shaun is a good bit older than me, so we don’t talk much, but Jared and I played against each other and we’ve been talking a little trash all week. You have to stand up for your school. Jared comes into the locker room with his South Carolina gear on and I have my Clemson gear on and we’ll go at it, but it’s all in good fun. We’re friends and teammates now.”

I’ll never forget the 2008 Thanksgiving Classic. To date, it’s the Tennessee Titans’ only. It may not have been the most exciting game in sports history, but it was certainly a day I’ll always remember.

In my family, football has always been as much a Thanksgiving staple as turkey and cranberry sauce. But my family is full of die-hard Tennessee fans.

Some years, the game’s on but not everyone is watching. The handful of devoted sports fans plant themselves on couches to watch the game in my grandmother’s living room, while everyone else sits around the dining room table or at the breakfast table catching up on each other’s lives over dessert and coffee.

But when the Titans played the Detroit Lions in 2008, it was a whole different ballgame. Four generations gathered around to see Chris Johnson, Titans’ runningback, make two touchdowns. (He ended up with over a 1,000 yards rushing that season.) The Titans defeated the Lions by 37 points in a game that ended 47-10. And a group as diverse as the members of my family, for once, found one common theme to rally around: a Titans Thanksgiving Day victory.

But what excited me even more than seeing the Titans’ win that day was getting to see my octogenarian grandfather screaming and cheering alongside my grandmother. The two of them divorced over thirty years ago. And for a few hours in time, it seemed like everything was right in the world.

It’s funny how a game like football can bring so many people together and cause them to put aside all their differences for a short while.

For memory’s sake, here are some highlights from that unforgettable game.

Born and raised in Tennessee in a family of Titans and Vols fans, Angela has been watching Tennessee football since she can remember.

By Jim Wyatt, The Tennessean

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The best advice Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray received while preparing for Cam Newton came from people who were there for the quarterback’s Heisman Trophy season at Auburn:

Try to sneak 15 defenders on the field.

The Titans put only 11 on the field Sunday, but the way the 11 played against Newton and the Panthers sparked the visitors to a 30-3 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

“We
watched the film on Cam all week and saw him make extraordinary
plays,” cornerback Jason McCourty said. “So Coach Gray challenged us.
He told us, ‘Don’t let him do those things against you.’ We didn’t want
any of his highlight-reel plays coming against our defense. I guess we
did a pretty good job.”

Marc Mariani returned
a punt 79 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the game, and
Chris Johnson rushed for 130 yards, but it was the defense that kept the
Titans (5-4) in command against the Panthers (2-7).

After watching Newton tear up the NFL
- his 1,381 passing yards in October were the most ever for a rookie in
any month – Gray created a plan that kept him from getting on track.

The Titans sacked Newton a season-high five times. Sometimes they got pressure with three players, other times they dialed up blitzes.

When
the Titans didn’t hit Newton, they disrupted his rhythm. They mixed
coverage, making him dump the ball off short. His favorite target,
playmaking wide receiver Steve Smith, was a nonfactor.

“You could
tell that he was getting frustrated,” said defensive lineman Jason
Jones, who had one of the five sacks. “He was flipping the ball and
doing stuff like that. As a defense, we wanted to keep getting in his
head, man. Even when we didn’t get to him, we wanted to make sure he saw
us. And that’s what we did.”

Newton finished 23-of-40 for 212
yards and no touchdowns, and he was intercepted once. He had just 104
yards after three quarters, however. He scrambled for 55 yards, but that
hardly made a difference.

In the first eight games of the season,
Newton posted four 290-yard passing games, including two games with
more than 400 passing yards. The Panthers went into the meeting ranked
fifth in the NFL in total offense, averaging 415.1 yards per game, but
managed just 279 against the Titans. They had 173 after three quarters.

“This
is embarrassing,” Newton said. “This is as poor a performance as a
team as I’ve ever seen, poor performance by myself. I know I could’ve
done a lot of things better.

“We had more three-and-outs than I
can even count. … Whatever they did, it was effective. In this league,
this is a copycat league so we can best believe the next team we’re
playing is going to watch this film and try and do the same thing, but
this can’t happen again.”

The Titans executed Gray’s plan to
perfection. He said he wanted to slow down Newton, not let him hit
anything deep, and taking Smith out of the game was also a priority.

Mission
accomplished. Newton’s longest completion was 19 yards, and Smith, who
averaged 115 yards going into the game, had 33 on five catches.

For the first time this season, the Titans didn’t allow a touchdown.

“The
players did a fantastic job of doing what I was trying to get them to
do,” Gray said. “Basically, we wanted to get back to what we were at
the beginning of the year, and we have to keep playing (like this).

“Cam is incredible … but I was proud of the way the guys played to keep him from having a day against us.”
